Rally Team Heats Up in Chile

First Enduro World Series race, first podium for our new Rocky Mountain Urge bp Rally Team!

The team traveled to Chile for the first EWS of the season with optimism. Our French riders Florian Nicolai, Isabeau Courdurier, and Alex Cure were joined by Canadian Jesse Melamed to battle it out with the world's best on Chilean soil. After two days of racing on some of the most unique and beautiful trails we've ever seen, Florian put down a blistering last stage to pass Martin Maes for 3rd place in the Overall category behind Jerome Clementz and Jared Graves!

The final results for the team were:

  • Florian Nicolai — 3rd Overall
  • Isabeau Courdurier — 5th Overall
  • Alex Cure — 7th Overall
  • Jesse Melamed — 30th Overall (coming back strong after several crashes!)

The team was aboard the Rocky Mountain Altitude 770 MSL Rally Edition, with Shimano components and footwear, Maxxis tires, Stan's NoTubes wheels, Fox premium suspension, and Raceface cockpits. The team wore the Urge bp Archi Enduro and Endur-O-Matic helmets. Ride Tuned Concept

Die Entwicklung eines Rahmens, der maximale Reifenbreiten ermöglicht und dabei die bekannte verspielte Rocky Mountain Geometrie beibehält, ist nicht gerade eine leichte Aufgabe. Die Geometrie wurde zusätzlich optimiert, um eine Federgabel in das Design zu integrieren und einen agressiven Lenkwinkel von 68,5° zu erreichen.

Der Rohrsatz besteht aus FORM™ Aluminium, das aufgrund seines geringen Gewichts bereits im Vertex zur Anwendung kommt und die bis zu 4,8 Zoll breiten Reifen unterbringen kann. Unser Ziel war klar: ein Fatbike, das echte Mountainbike-Gefühle hervorruft und maximalen Spaßfaktor bei weichen Trailbedingungen schafft – auch dank des vergleichsweise kurzen Oberrohrs haben wir das geschafft.

Rocky Mountain – Urge bp Rally Team

Rocky Mountain Bicycles has joined forces with Urge Bike Products to launch the ROCKY MOUNTAIN – URGE bp RALLY TEAM, a dedicated Enduro World Series race team for 2014. This new team of 4 riders is grounded in the successes of both URGE bp and Rocky Mountain's previous Enduro team efforts at the French, North American, and Enduro World Series levels.

  • Florian Nicolai (Age: 20) — 13th overall in the 2013 EWS, 3rd overall in the 2013 Enduro Series French Cup
  • Jesse Melamed (Age: 21) — 6th at the 2013 Whistler EWS
  • Alex Cure (Age: 20) — 19th overall in the 2013 EWS, and winner of the first ever EWS stage (Punta Ala, IT)
  • Isabeau Courdurier (Age:19) — 2013 Enduro Series French Cup Winner, and 4th women at the 2013 Val d'Isère EWS

Rocky Mountains Produktmanager, -designer und -ingenieure waren sich einig, dass ein simples spaßorientiertes Cross-Country Bike auf Basis unserer Race-Bikes in unserem Lineup fehlte. WHISTLER, BC — This year marked the 10th year of Crankworx, and as the pinnacle of the week the Red Bull Joyride slopestyle contest exceeded all expectations. Rocky Mountain rider Geoff Gulevich commented that the course, which snaked its way across the mountain and through thousands of spectators, was "by far the best Joyride course ever." Although the weather threatened to spoil the fun, the ominous clouds cleared throughout the afternoon and the riders put on a show for the ages.

 

Congratulations to Geoff and everyone who shredded the Red Bull Joyride course this weekend. Also, our thoughts go out to the riders who were injured in the event — get well soon!

WHISTLER, BC — The Official Whip-Off World Championships was originally an underground event dreamed up by photographer Sven Martin. With massive popular appeal, Crankworx has since made it official, and every year both the riders and the crowd get more and more rowdy. Thomas Vanderham and Geoff Gulevich were out there having a blast this week.

WHISTLER BC, Canada - The Crankworx Enduro World Series race has come and gone. Battered bodies are gingerly making their way to well-deserved food and dusty bikes are getting some well-deserved cleaning. With the race being on our home turf we fielded a strong contingent of riders, including our Altitude Enduro Team of young, up-and-coming enduro racers.

In his second ever Enduro World Series race 21-year-old Jesse Melamed was the event's biggest surprise, earning a blisteringly fast 6th place against an incredibly stacked field. Read his race report below. Words by Jesse Melamed. Photos by Margus Riga and Sean St. Denis.

Race Report

Getting off to an early start, it was awesome to roll out of the VIP deck together with our team captain and mentor Andreas Hestler, before heading up the gondola to Khyber for Stage 1. Due to a thunderstorm delay we had only 15-second starting intervals for the first stage, which made for lots of interesting passing. I didn't warm up enough and was having some issues with arm-pump, so my riding was a bit rough on this stage. I had two over-the-bars crashes—I'd pass two guys, crash, and have to pass them again as I made up time. Still, other guys were having problems too and I was able to salvage a 16th place on the stage.

Stage 2 was on Business Time and AM-PM, both super fun trails. I actually caught a guy right as he crashed and ended up T-boning him pretty hard. He was okay, but it ended up eating a bit of time. This stage had a lot of spectators, which was awesome because you can't help but push a bit harder when people are yelling your name. With the help of a fast bottom section I was able to snag 13th place for the stage.

After the first two stages we had a long uphill transfer to Stage 3. I was running a single 36t chainring, which meant I had to push up the steepest bits. Some of the big-name riders were running smaller-than-normal chainrings and then changing them before the final stage. On one hand I'd have been able to conserve some energy by doing that, but it's not exactly in the spirit of the competition; nobody goes for a ride with multiple chainrings in their backpack.

Stage 3 was my stage. Pura Vida is one of my favourite trails and I knew I could put down a good result. It's tight, twisty, technical, steep, and super fast—a perfect Whistler trail—and I absolutely nailed my run. Unfortunately, I blew off the trail and down an embankment just before the finish line, and those seconds getting myself back together cost me a stage win. Regardless, I was super happy to be up there with the big guns and nobody can complain about coming 3rd after Jerome and Fabien.

I consoled myself about throwing away a stage win during the big climb to the 4th stage. My equipment was perfect on the day, no mechanical issues at all, but it was good that some guys were able to sort out their bike problems during the generous transfer times between stages.

Stage 4 was on Billy's Epic, which was two loose, steep descents separated by a two-minute climb in the middle. Normally I can count on my fitness as an advantage, but against these ultra-fit, world class racers I knew I'd have to make my time on the descents and was really happy with 5th place.

Finally, we had a break for lunch and a bit of recovery before heading up to the Top of the World trail for Stage 5. By this point I knew a good result was possible, so I had to remind myself to ride just a little conservatively throughout the 20-plus minute descent. That being said, I had one small get-off on the stage, and I was absolutely worked by the finish, so I think I played it just about right. I claimed 18th on the stage.

This result, along with a pretty high starting number put me in the hot seat for quite a while. It was awesome having all my friends and the riders I coach encourage me. Definitely a feeling I could get used to. Ultimately though, my time was good enough for 6th place on the day—awesome!

Finishing 6th overall leaves me chasing all sorts of "what-ifs"—13 seconds faster throughout the day would have put me in 3rd spot. But, then I give my head a shake and am ecstatic about the result. This sort of event is everything I've wanted mountain bike racing to be and it's so cool to be a part of it.

The Altitude Enduro Team Tastes Enduro World Series Racing

The Rocky Mountain Altitude Enduro Team is fresh off its first Enduro World Cup race at Winter Park, Colorado.

The team of Jesse Melamed (21, Whistler, BC), Kevin Soller (25, Breckenridge, CO), and Peter Ostroski (24, Intervale, NH) is captained and mentored by Olympian and Canadian cycling icon Andreas Hestler. They’ve landed several top ten finishes in the North American Enduro series’, and their sights are firmly on the North American Enduro World Series events.

The Colorado Freeride Festival, held at the Trestle Bike Park, played host to the first ever Enduro World Series event in North America. With 151 pro men taking the line, including experienced professionals from Europe, this was a rigorous test for the Altitude Enduro Team’s young development riders.

Five timed stages ranging in time from 5 to 11 minutes put the riders through rough, rocky descents and over bike park jump trails at an elevation of over 10, 000 feet. Dark thunderclouds peppered day one with hail, and the daily heavy showers kept the stages tacky, difficult, and yet super fun.

Jesse Melamed posted some impressive results with a 16th, 18th, and a 23rd, but the flat tire on stage 3A cost him a crack at the overall top 20. Peter Ostroski was consistent all weekend long with a 38th overall. Kevin Soller crashed hard on stage one and gained ground all weekend long to finish a respectable 71st.

With Round 5 of the Enduro World Series in Whistler BC only two weeks away, the team is looking forward to some competition on home soil. Feeling comfortable pushing World Cup speeds and knowing that they can mix it up with the top racers in the world will provide even more confidence heading into the later part of the season.

Ziel des Fahrwerkdesigns war zum einen effizienter Vortrieb mit optimaler Nutzung der Tretenergie sicherzustellen und zum anderen größere Schläge und Brocken, sowohl bergauf mit perfekter Traktion, als auch bergab balanciert und ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken, wegzustecken. Damit wurde die Vielseitigkeit des Bikes um ein Vielfaches erhöht: das Instinct ist das richtige Bike für das 4-stündige Marathonrennen am Samstag, die ruppigen und anspruchsvollen Trails am Sonntag und es ist auch geeignet, um am Montag mit einer epischen Tagestour im Backcountry abzuschließen (verlängertes Wochenende versteht sich!).
